One of the most influential aspects in a person’s life is religion. Yet there are still a lot of people in the world who are atheist and do not believe in God. The problem with this is that there is no positive proof or evidence for the existence of God. Many people will argue that God is just a made up being and that there is no truth behind God or religion. I ask these people: where is the faith and what do you believe in?
Now, I am a wholehearted believer in God and Christianity. Therefore I do not understand why you need proof that something exists. That is the main argument against the existence of God. Non-believers say they need PROOF that God exists and without it they cannot subject themselves to believing in what they call a “fictional” God. My argument for this is Love. We have no proof that love exists yet we think very highly of it. People live their entire lives looking and searching for love yet it is a feeling that cannot be proven to be concrete. Love cannot be seen and cannot be made, it just happens. So what is so different between these two things? Nothing. There are a lot of things in life that can’t be proven but we still believe in them. Yet when it comes to God or religion these same people need absolute proof God exists.
Non-believers say they need PROOF that God exists and without it they cannot subject themselves to believing in what they call a fictional God. My argument for this is 'Love.'
I for one do not need proof. I grew up in a somewhat Christian family and went to church regularly growing up. The most influential person in my life when it came to religion was definitely my grandmother. My grandma is a saint, and the most sincere and beautiful person in the world. She has always been a big part of my life and has lived with my family and me for a good part of my life, so she has always been there to influence me. My grandma is a VERY religious person. Church every Sunday, church choir member, Eucharistic minister, and helps in basically every other church sponsored event. I still today, hang on every proclamation or piece of advice my grandma gives me. I use my memories of growing up with my grandma as my evidence God exists.
But for those people who need some sort of proof, here you go. First of all let’s look at the Bible. The Bible speaks of and passes on stories about God, his deeds, and his son. Why would a group of real people choose to make up elaborate and extensive stories of a fictional character? They have made no financial profit off of their works and have no other reason to make up these stories. Not only can most of these characters in the Bible be proven and are known to be true but the most influential and important person in the Bible, Jesus, God’s son, is known to be a real person. So most of the Bible can be proven and thus agreed with, yet when the Bible speaks about God, that part is false. Makes sense to me…not really. Non-believers think that evolution is proof of God’s fallacy, but the Bible does not denounce evolution, and in fact it embraces evolution in many parts of the New Testament. In fact, it says that evolution is part of our growing as people. So evolution and religion are not separate ideas.
Another main issue that is brought up is if God is so perfect, then why would he make humans so imperfect? If everyone was so perfect the world would be a boring place. Everyone would be robot-like and nothing interesting would ever happen. What fun would it be for God to watch our free will at work if we were all perfect? By giving us free will, God gave every human the innate ability to decide his/her life. Even though free will is used in today’s society to do some terrible things, it is still the biggest part of our lives and really makes each person different and unique. To finish off these so called “proofs” that God does not exist we look towards this suffering. Suffering exists mainly due to free will. Suffering happens because people harm other people, not because God is punishing us. As humans we have the ability to learn from our past and change and grow as people. This is the main reasons why God gave us the ability to be our own person. If everything was cookie cut for us we would never grow and would be the same people our entire lives.
I can sympathize and understand why people like to have proof and evidence that something exists, but when it comes to God you won’t get that. I went to a catholic school and was forced to take religion for nine years. But this is not the reason I believe in God. In fact, catholic school was more of a hindrance to my beliefs. My family is the main reason I believe in what I believe today. Also the faith and belief in God, or anything at all, gives much more fulfillment towards life then to just live for nothing and no reason. Even though you don’t see him, God does exist. He is an intricate part of each one of our lives and lives with us on a daily basis. If you need proof of God's existence just look around. Look at all of the sincere and great people that are around you. Look at all of the people that you love. Look at all of the beautiful things in life that are really worth living for. These are all wonderful creations of God. If you can look at everything and tell me that God does not exist, and that something so perfect could not have been created by a higher being, then you are absolutely crazy. So if at any point you are confused and don’t know what to believe, just look around. Take a peek at all of the intricacies in life and thank God that he made such a wonderful place for us, because only a God so perfect and great could create such a masterpiece. So keep the faith and believe, but most importantly remember that even though you can’t see it that doesn’t mean it’s not there!
